The most important theme of World War I was to overcome the struggles alive. In the paintings "Machine Gun" and "Over the Top", a struggle can be found. The struggle in "Machine Gun" was there since if there weren't any struggle, the machine gun wouldn't be needed. Some Americans stated that the machine guns were indeed powerful but they were mostly used for scaring enemies away. America wouldn't take out a machine gun to use unless there were a big problem like overwhelming amounts of enemy troops approaching. With that being said, this makes the Americans who believed this wrong. Once thought of, America couldn't take on over 100,000 enemy soldiers at once with just a pistol. In the painting "Over the Top", it shows soldiers climbing out of a trench in a blizzard and marching to a destination. Looking at the painting closely, I could see a struggle since the soldiers have to climb out of a ditch on a freezing day. America stated that they wanted Isolationism in their country before they were driven into World War I. The troubles they have encountered in both paintings show that America wanted to get back at the enemy territory for driving them into the war. Therefore, this makes the overall theme of World War I to survive the struggles, overcome the struggles, and defeat the struggles.
15/20 (85): I liked that you gave a few examples of your main theme in the paintings and used the details from the painting to support your idea. You should be mentioning alternate perspectives in your writing and responding to the critics of your argument. What if someone saw a more consistent theme, what would you say about your presented theme?
