Who freed the slaves? Did President Lincoln and the US government free the slaves or did the slaves free themselves? Explain!

  1. The slaves freed themselves, because they were the ones who ran away without the slave masters and slave catchers knowing. When running away, they thought of their own strategies. They fled to the free states where they were protected by the Union. Some joined the Union while others enjoyed their freedom from their masters. Even if slave catchers try to come and retrieve the runaways, they won't get turned over without a fight. In those times, violence was the answer from wars to abuse. The people of the Union were against slavery so they helped the runaways. It was a long journey with lots of rest and food along the way, but they managed to survive until they finally arrived to the free states. Lincoln was against slavery and he tried to help by talking with the US government. The government protected the slaves once they got to the free states so the slaves weren't free until "they" arrived. Therefore, the slaves freed themselves from their masters.

16/20 (Level 3): You did a great job of expanding your reader's knowledge about the process of running away and how the army was involved. I see that you used your knowledge of class to answer the question in a formal style, nice work Webmaster!

I would have liked for you to add specific document evidence in this piece where you refer to a historical document we studied in class. That would have helped to support your argument even more!
